Medford Wood Flooring is a wood flooring company based in Medford, MA, with more than 20 years of experience sanding, refinishing, repairing and installing hardwood floors. Most of what we work on is older: oak and pine floors in houses that have been lived in for generations, stairs worn at the nosing, and floors that took on water and need to be judged carefully before anything is torn out.
We would rather save a floor than replace it, and in houses like the ones around here, the original floor is usually worth saving. When it is not, we say so and install a new one properly.
Our Approach

We look before we price. On a worn red oak floor in a postwar Cape or Garrison, that means checking how much wood is left above the tongue before a sander comes in. In any house built before 1978, it means checking the build year and any painted surfaces first, because Massachusetts runs its own lead-safe renovation rules. On an older floor, it means testing for wax and cleaning residue so a new finish bonds instead of peeling, and choosing finishes that meet the Massachusetts limits for wood coatings, which are stricter than the federal ones.
We also try to fit the work around the people living in the house. In an owner-occupied two-family, we do one floor at a time so the household upstairs or downstairs can stay home. Holes where radiators and pipes came out are patched with matching boards woven into the floor, not filled. Stain colors are chosen from samples laid on your own floor in your own light.
After a leak, we trace the water and read the floor with a moisture meter before any board is replaced, and we document the damage room by room for the adjuster. Stairs are quoted by the tread and riser, and lower-level floors are matched to the moisture that is actually there, which usually means engineered wood rather than solid.
What We Do
We refinish and restore hardwood floors, screen and recoat floors that are dull but sound, repair damaged boards, squeaks and radiator patches, and handle floors damaged by water. We install solid and engineered hardwood, herringbone and wide plank floors, replace carpet with hardwood, stain floors to the color you choose, and refinish or rebuild hardwood stairs. If you have a floor you are wondering about, request a free estimate and we will come and look at it with you.
